Squeaking Door Handle

Severely neglected door hardware might. Wd 40 or other penetrating oils are the perfect tool for this because they come in cans designed to direct a fine stream of oil directly into the offending part of the door knob mechanism. Then tap the pins back into the hinges. Lubricating your old door hardware not only eliminates those annoying squeaking squealing and clicking sounds but also extends the life of the equipment.

The hinge is the part that actually supports the opening and closing of the door. Three areas will generally cause the squeak. To stop squeaky door hinges apply a lubricating oil to the inside of the hinges. In short the most likely reason why your door handle is squeaking every time you press it is plain old rust.

Simply spray a strong hold hairspray straight on to the hinge from about one inch away. If you do this with the door closed and latched you can remove the pin without the door falling off. Hairspray creates a polymer seal preventing squeaky door hinges from loosening and moving around. Tap out hinge pin.

With that in mind it stands to reason that restoring the grease should prevent the moving parts from becoming noisy. Be sure that you have everything you need on your side of the door. The first step in the diagnostic process is to open and close the door a few times until you are sure the door is where the sound is coming from. Once the pin is loose pull it out lift up on the door handle to relieve pressure if the pin binds.

Most hinges with removable pins are open at the bottom so you can gently hammer a nail or even a nailset up underneath the hinge pin to push it up enough to get a screwdriver or prybar underneath it. The lack of lubrication usually only exacerbates the issue. Keep the door closed and work on only one hinge at a time. Loosen each hinge pin by tapping an 8d nail up from underneath.

Determine which hinge is squeaky. The hinge can rust over time which will create a squeaking or scraping sound. The best way to fix a squeaky door knob is usually the simplest and most obvious. You can also dip the pins in melted paraffin wax to stop them from squeaking.

If they keep squeaking use a hammer and nail to tap out the pins inside of the hinges and then coat them with white grease motor oil or cooking oil. The quick fix just lifting the hinge pin and squirting a little oil into the hinge will work for the short run but the squeaking will inevitably return. Hinges seals and the door check.
